This is the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and sharks are now. You're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you're sick leave your world stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day can. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck son. You know you can a shareholder of General Electric stock over the last year. Like I said it's our turn yourself out when I think the word challenging is probably putting it nicely the ride that you've been on. Since April 20 of 27 team the stock on that day one year ago was a 29 dollars and 55 cents. It went down to a low of twelve dollars and 73 cents just a few weeks ago. But the last couple days but the good news starting to potentially come through Ford GD they reported earnings this morning. And it's not so much that they knocked the cover off the ball. But rather the world doesn't appear to be ending for G it simply is staying quiet. Ed at least it's not ending as fast as it was before and so on an adjusted basis G here in G yearn sixteen cents a share. Analysts have been expecting eleven. That you saw revenue rise for the for the quarter and they're starting to really implement this cost cutting program that they've been talking about for awhile they wanna cut their costs by two billion dollars and 28 team. And bad days in eternity under five million so far. So. I hesitate to say that we reached a bottom for G I just don't know especially. As we have this ongoing investigation to there counting. Practices. But is. Does it feel like a bottom do you. Well here here's the thing when you look at how the business is actually doing first quarter revenue was up 7% Euro for years that's actually a decent sign this. This isn't a company that is seen shrinking revenue right now right that you saw a gain in revenue which is good that's that's what you always want to see if you are. The company number one you wanna grow your sales have been doing that. Then they're power division continues to be a a drag on the company there in their power sales are down 29% that is not finding any one. Who wants to a whole lot of construction on that side of things. But place that they are seeing some growth right now health care renewable transportation you're seeing some growth in those areas. In those theories that we know they want to focus that we know they're placing an emphasis. On those areas the question that I continue to have is look what is the the one thing that GE does that no one else can do. I don't have an answer so I don't I look at a company like Amazon they say hey they can deliver in two days better than anyone else. I look at Wal-Mart even on out of Wal-Mart shopper I see they're gonna get you the lowest prices now have the biggest selection out of any Perkin mortar retail I know that that's you can get there. GE O to that I say OK you know they they make MRI machines they make wind turbines. What they do better than anyone else and and I don't have the answer to that question. This this earnings report. It at least buys them time to answer the question yeah and that's the big thing that I take from it. GE is not going the way of seers sure they're not going out of business this year they are not a company that is a going concern it's it's a company. That has some struggles as far as where to be fit in the future but this earnings report more than anything else. Tells us they would gee he's not going anywhere any time soon they might not be going back up to thirty dollars share. It is not going to zero by the end of the year you. No I mean that's certainly not happening but I do still think you have it varies significantly different looking company with in the next five years that has. Slimmer so hopefully slimmer and more focused I think that's what all of the analysts wanna see is sell off the businesses that you're not. Succeeding in and focus on what can be a real growth subject for. Let's turn over and talk a little bit about oil here the president tweeting out this morning and I quote from his tweet this was at 6:57 this morning looks like OPEC is that it again with records amount of oil all over the place including the polluted ships at sea. Oil prices are artificially very high no good it would not be accepted. Do not wrong you know it's look we know that OPEC they they they're very up front that they are a cartel date they are a call ourselves once they if they are a price fixing cartel there than they have been trying to hide this for months. At all no we we know that this is what they do we know that they came out about a year and a half ago and said look we don't enjoy 27 dollar oil. We want the press to get a little bit higher and we we opened yesterday's show by saying that we crossed the 69 dollar mark the first time. In about three and a half years on oil pulling back today back down to 67. Bought us. Still significantly higher than a year ago we're starting to see it trickling through the pump oil prices or gas prices rather in the last month up eighteen cents nationally. And so the question is. Can the US do anything from a policy perspective to bring these prices down the thing that you've heard talked about in the last. I don't know probably the couple couple days now it seems like is tapping the strategic oil reserve which I would. Not recommend doing in this kind of scenario that's that would air. No I mean hey this is the same thing that happened back in 2014 you know oil prices went through the roof. And what happened US markets reacted to a Canadian markets reacted to when you have hundred dollar barrel oil. They're crazy stuff that was going on in North Dakota and you know the amount of money the amount of oil coming out of the the shells up in Canada that's what happens and good for jobs in the US especially great for jobs in the US and you we seen it before. Yes OPEC still does have a lot of influence over the price of oil. And yeah they do want oil prices high they've they're trying to bring public their their oil company Saudi aramco potentially this year or next so yeah they're going to try and artificially raise prices. Don't necessarily think it's that terrible thing for the US you know the average American. Here's my thought on this also in the last two years the amount of oil that the US is producing on a daily basis. Got from that eight point two million barrels day up to ten point five million barrels base it's pretty big increases okay. The other thing that we have started doing in the United States is we've started exporting oil. OK we lifted a ban on exporting crude oil and right now on a weekly on a daily basis and so are we currently export about one point seven million barrels a day. A year ago it was about 500500000. Barrels OK so a big shift there. I would make the case that at a certain level. It's actually beneficial to the US for May nationals security perspective to have oil in this range because allows for more US production. Which allows for more US export which helps to balance the trade deficit that the president has talked about so significantly. Yeah I mean ended it's a tough argument to me because on the cap on the other side of that you know we have. Das being one of the main expenses of the average US consumer there's no doubt about that that hits. Yeah that hit the wall pretty hard but. If it's not like it was two decades ago when we are importing a significant amount of the oil that we are consuming it's just not the case anymore we are exporting it it is it you know it's a boon to a large portion of the US economy. When oil prices are up in the US 607080 dollar range. I look at the exports that we have from an oil perspective right now works at about a 119 million dollars per day that we are exporting and OK when when you do the math out. So it's a significant chunk. At this point NC say gee what what kind of a difference does that make when it's all said and done. You're potentially talking about you know forty billion dollars and exports over the course of the year there if prices stay in this range if they go back down by 20%. You're talking note 3032. Billion. It still does not sit you know that the full 500 plus billion dollar trade deficit that we have. But I look at this and say look from a national security perspective. That there's a ton towards stabilizing the dollar yet it is a ton towards keeping capital in the United States instead of simply having it flow overseas. And so. I don't view higher oil prices necessarily. As all bad just like I don't you lower ones is all good you know when you had low ones they're job water it earlier in the job loss that he had in the Dakotas that he had in Texas. We don't feel it up here in the northeast is we don't really have a whole lot of oil oil production of the last time that you drove past an oil well in Springfield was the first OK okay. So. It's when do you think it's true we've got this you know got prices going up with yeah Massachusetts is averaging one to seventy gallon for gas and I believe yeah in just a quick follow up Scott from jury to two via text line the Dow bees text line says. A page 260 yesterday and overnight it went up a nickel and that's what's gonna have not mass apps tab. Just to 71 New Hampshire is 266. Vermont to 73. If you're in Connecticut it's up to 286 it was 284 yesterday by the way. In these gas prices I'm fine right now gas prices dot AAA dot com it's the triple A gas Wenzhou please. Our secede consumer behavior on what their drive or do we not start seeing 350 yards system to send a number three unity and a gap and it's it's surprising to me you think about it fifteen years ago you saw a lot of changes in behavior bent. You can drive suvs these days to get pretty darn good gas mileage but I still think you will see that change in behavior if you get all the way up there. They're not to eight mile per gallon homers that right we're driving in 2001. But they're also not the forty mile a gallon civics the people were dropped in five years ago yeah you know it's okay can get 2324 miles a gallon then it's not all you know it's the it's not terrible still stings when you felt tanker costs under box. Folks let's head over to our whole question of the day it's up on financial exchange showed dot com right now. And some of you may or may not know but somebody's birthday. Birthday Yahoo!. Forget the marijuana news today. The first drug derived from candidates has been cleared for. FDA approval on this was an outside panel of advisors to the FDA that gave this vote of approval. And so it appears to be getting closer. Q actually gaining the ability to lobby used in the United States yet in the process here is actually that it gets recommended for approval to the FDA by an outside pale and the FDA's ago dude there. Separate approvals but it's being used to treats apple severe epilepsy in children. Which. I know. Good. The idea this it does not contain this is. A drug that's developed by a company called GW pharmaceuticals. Called. Epic dialects. And it it can stick contains the active ingredient. Can a video all. But does not contain the the TH C that gives you the the Luby's so it's is it doesn't really have. A whole lot in terms negative side effects from a PO making you feel like you're on Mars perspective. And look at it can treat. You know children who were going through you know success and progress with the procedures and so force. They seemed to make a whole lot of sense to me how well. Our order fingers start to see candidates related medical items being an alternative to OP or it's going for I think this is the first step I think it's gonna be a major push now and I think it's it's going to be a major push. An industry of potentially being the first one to end up with FDA approval. As it makes its way down this past. Also talking about. Well drugs of some kind. Built more arrests are suffering the biggest daily fall in the decade. As. Cigarette volume just is is not keeping up people are smoking anymore. Fallen off a ledge serve to keep in mind folks ask Philip Morris obviously a brand that most people are familiar with Philip Morris the company. Specifically sells tobacco products outside the United States borders. So they you know they on the Marlboro brand but there's also for marketing and sales outside the United States. That stock was down nearly 16%. Yesterday. Dip a huge huge dip and I think Philip Morris had been. According their statements they had been forecasting a drop off in in in demand. Coming may be later this year but I think they were they themselves it sounds like we're very surprised by how significant of a drop off and and you had. They're testing on a lot of new technologies. You know we see the cigarettes all of the plays that they've got different products in Japan and Latin America that they've been trying out and none of them really seemed to have been making much of a dent. That the big thing that the markets that they saw the drops in word Japan Russia and Saudi Arabia that typically. Hold up pretty well and and don't see declines are significant declines. In smoking rates but he's seems like. Just use your continuing to see just as precipitous decline in in smoking rates which looks is great for public health there if you own tobacco stocks got a raise questions for. He had you know it does. And I don't know what the game if you're tobacco company would it what is your area for expansion right you know what do you do if you've got to constantly declining. Demand group you know over the last it's been pretty impressive. You know read wrong or different. But these companies and be able to do as new taxes and you knew costs have been going into the sale of tobacco. You know companies have really just been able to increase prices along side with that had snuck in a lot of price increases over the years which has really helped profitability. But you might be reaching a turning point here and I think the long term future for these companies is in marijuana. Ask I was gonna argue that I think that's what they really have. Mag that probably have a that is. They're not gonna touch and Tillis federally nova than they have the distribution already in place they've got the supply chains they can come in and I think just absolutely dominate the market. I it depends how long it takes the United States another decade before this is federally legal I would think that there's going to be in they're sales declines in these other markets are gonna leave them in a position where they might not be. You know fiscally prepared to do so they may have a few see the smoking drop off this significantly and you don't see. Marijuana legalized in time for them to take advantage of it because you have right now they're sitting on tons of cash that they could put to work on this if they felt comfortable that it was legal to do so. Do you know how many cigarettes the average US citizen consumed back in the sixties at the peak. Consumption taking a per year per year. Number of cigarettes resumed an average US cigarette consumption that the peak year by the way it was 1966. I'm gonna guess 3500. I was digress about a thousand so. About 42 hundreds of talkers pretty close. At 4260. Whose future the average smoker or the average that is never that is the annual adult per capita cigarette can. That's per capita that means you know get back then 50% of people didn't smoke to the average smokers doing about 8000 cigarettes a year now. Which is insane by the 8000 a year on average mean modern anybody use smoke cigarettes the of the ones who actually did some actually no nope nope sorry I was looking at the wrong data there. The big thing that we see now I'm missing your turn a pack. Toward 518. Me. On school last. Summaries when he arrived in Canada point five in Canada. Mansi. Gonna be like eighteen to Taiwanese support that not in the United States of America the quantity what are your 20s20. And some come in 25 so I mean back then if you're saying that 8000. Her smokers in print and today. Knew more assessed much. Yeah it's just I I just I find just the sheer number when you actually say 4000 cigarettes a year 8000 a year. They just the sheer numbers it's absolutely nuts Spencer have. We're gonna take a break when we come back we're talking about how massive health overpaid for drug tests and also why the commute from Chelsea to Boston. Might take a look at markets right now couple stocks we wanted to dig into. Start first with Skechers. So Skechers just released earnings their earnings for the prior quarter themselves not that bad but their guidance for the year was. Atrocious the stock is currently down over eleven bucks a share and 27%. Right now. You know continued difficulty with retailers. Skechers has not escaped. In really just changes in consumer taste don't know with pinnacle foods as a pinnacle foods has a new big investor. Jana fund is taking aid nearly 10% stake in the company. And actors investor Jana partners. Big stake in the company who knows where they're gonna drive it's but and obviously that's driving the stock price today pinnacle foods is up nearly 9%. And this is just couple months after pinnacle was he's 52 week low down under 52 dollar range so someone sees some value in this company. Even win it had been going through a little bit of a challenge a couple quarters here you turn around mass health overpaid for drug tests according to an audit. Shocker four point four million dollars over four years they've overpaid for drug testing great so it's yet this was according to a report released yesterday by state auditor Suzanne M bump. And and look four point four million dollars in terms of overall budget. It it's a small piece the automatic air. And get their money and how to get nearly a technical gotta say my words. So mass health spoke overall budget is fifteen point three billion dollars but let's say that there are a hundred different places where you overpaid by four point four million. All of a sudden you sit they're going gee that's 400 million dollars. That's something pretty significant yeah and so. It'd be effective story here if you get into details you know I favor overpaying when somebody got two different drug tests. There should have been hated discounted rates and it just complete lack of accountability. That's what's frustrating here and mass how this coming out and say well you know we're not sure that you'd give all your calculations are right in week. You know we're after Taylor invests in is just. This is what ruins people's. Faith and difference Billy your business. Great it is not so much look the four point four million to one thing but look if you're if you're having those kind of over expenses on something this simple. You say OK now what about when he deals more complicated than how how do you trust in the overall. A system that is doing what it's supposed to do so not a great finding there and certainly mark there I'm sure there's going to be more coming there. Some good news if you have been Chelsea which by the way I don't know if you've looked at housing prices in the Chelsea area in the last. A couple of years they are knots really through group. Absolutely insane and this is going to drive them higher because now what we're seeing is that Chelsea is getting four silver line stops. On the silver line's newest route that is going to. To be opening starting tomorrow. Makes sense need to get traffic into south station in the seaport district. In their their religious been no way to get from a lot of these different in different parts of Boston that are geographically sold very close to the city. And if you're trying to attract these big businesses like Amazon you have to be able to you know develop new places for people focus right now commuters from jealousy people from Winthrop. And that is not a great way to get into the city. Yeah you know what I would like to see more of could just is that I've seen them being used around boss an awful lot but you have to a number of these ferries that actually you know kind of connect some of these different places this is when the goes from Charlestown down towards the aquarium there's one from the aquarium over towards. The airport. You can get all the way down to I think. Although we don't hate him I think with a couple of these actually maybe even further I think. Actually know him I think might be the furthest one that goes there but you know I look at this nice say. Look you've got all this open water in Boston harper and obviously there's times words busier and so forth you know you don't want a whole bunch traffic when the big Nat gas tankers coming through his may have stay out of that guy's way but. It would seem to me that you're trying to get more cars going through is necessarily the most efficient instead looking got all the soap and water hey let's get some fares going back and. Portland more frequent I used to always violence and hang them we always took the and comparing his phenomenal awesome it is elected it cheap there's no there's no traffic as you are you. It is the bar open all day yup hope but you're looking at the all day every day. Oh that's financial there on a Friday at 5 o'clock all man. More fairies I I am firmly in favor of yelling there's no real interest are rushing to put day's night telecommute you know layer re going to get water out there. But if I admit that not that is and in the civilized still has to deal with traffic and that's a real issue by civil and doesn't have a rail it's not like the Red Line the Green Line in laying track down this is just drive in some of the silver point has its own dedicated lanes but largely. News and Abbas on the street and the only thing with the circling back to the fairest chuck is calm in the winter there's a lot of days with the ferry can't cry because of ice. They can't they get ice breaking there it's. Vick could ya if you wanted to really make this a serious commitment insurer but I'd just on your habit they've had to shut it down again and don't like Titanic scenario on. Now we've we've we don't need that let's take a quick look at our poll question of the day up now on financial exchange showed dot com. It's question that's been on my mind since probably the beginning of the year. Paper or plastic. Which do you prefer and the answers those bar appears to be plastic. You got in just retirement this off feared just one. I just debates or argument point for in in favor of paper. As you can use paper is kindling in campfires if you will or starting or fire pits are starting your grill to do have plastic canyon. Now you know you do those two guys and doesn't and while no it doesn't at all not nudity paper. And. Yeah we spoke with many of you who have chosen to manage your own portfolios and today we wanna talk you to you do it yourself authors. Because you know well your portfolios may be riding high there are other aspects of your plan and we get help US app portfolio management is just one piece of the larger pie. Did either of you know there are still two million borrower's that owe more on their mortgage than their home is worth I did not antivirus the circle that Amazon. That was pre surprising and I didn't know was that high there's still two million. Homeowners that are underwater on their mortgages. At this point probably not too many in the New England area though I'm guessing there's a few in some towns via. But a lot of them concentrate obviously out west Las Vegas air's own probably fewer in Florida as well. But it's. What's interesting is the Fed did a survey. On. These these people who were still underwater on their mortgages and and one of the questions they ask them on this survey. It was why do you keep paying the mortgage is obviously like it's it's tough when you sit there and you say gee the house next to be sold for 200000 us to get 250 grand on my mortgage and late leads the it it takes a toll on him. The number one reason obviously not surprising I like my house and I don't want to lose 77% of people said look that's that's the number one reason why. I want to keep paying my mortgage. Some of the other things that you know factored in here the number two was the cost of having to move to a different home is too high if I stop making payments. But again the number one reason why people continue to was. It wasn't anything moral necessarily but simply look at it like where I live I don't wanna move. I mean for me yeah I doubt I'd be one of the bigger arguments were in this same situation my concern would be the long term repercussions of having defaulted. What does you credit when or does it right what did this year ability to get a job down the road. Is that they're serious issues that people have to deal with when they've gone through. Day effectively bankruptcy. It's it's moved in on it's not an easy thing to do. Only about 19% of people shared that same sentiment right what's it what's interesting is only fifteen and a half percent of people said that it was morally wrong to stop making payments. That strikes me is being a lower number than I'd like to see. Yeah I mean hey yeah hey you you would like to people generally feel that you would like to see people generally feeling that you know I've signed up for an obligation I'm going to pay that obligation. I I have I've signed a contract as we don't know when you go out and get a mortgage. You sign a whole bunch of documents it's not you not just saying gee I'd I think this would be good idea you're you're saying hey Al Amal a mall in on this. But only fifteen point 5% of people saying it was a moral. Wrong to stop making pay. It's to play the devil's advocate for a moment there. The lending practices that were done by a lot of these mortgage companies leading up to this crisis. We're not exactly. Fully transparent or fair earlier with a lot of these people so like and I can see that sentiment for some individuals. The point very good point we're gonna take a break when we come back we're gonna talk about the future for Apple's iPhone X. I folks it's very Armstrong in am joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lot ski with your legal exchange quick tip of the day. We're talking today about the differences between revolt Kubel and durable global trust. Todd what is the biggest difference between ripple global and irrevocable trusts probably the most commonly asked question never. Probably is and first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust its not just one kind and so that's what makes it hard to Germany would be at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only trusts now the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of and your vocal trust with a revoke of trust and there really biggest differences. The irrevocable trust protector ass as an arsenal the Reebok of trust never will so why would somebody use a revolt global trusts. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or what did well or lots of wealth and end their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home some how much money you have to happy if you like we define rich force I don't ask. 10000059. With the estate tax laws as high as they've exemptions have gone as high as they are let's say you know 34 million dollars or less you'd probably still going to be considering an irrevocable trust if you're over age sixty. The state planning expert at Cushing and Dolan have written a brand new guide that will answer the most common questions you have regarding revolt Kubel and irrevocable trusts the phone number to receive the guide is 866. 8485699. The financial exchanges all over New England to go to financial exchange showed dotcom and search for the station closest to you this is the financial exchange radio network. This segment financial exchange brought you in part by obvious northern Italian steakhouse the obvious has nine locations throughout the East Coast with five locations in the Boston area including bringing tree at the South Shore plaza an opening its first. West Coast location and Irvine California the summer. I doubt as you can enjoy speak seasonal cocktails handmade costs is perfectly cooked brand beef stakes as well as rates eat fresh seafood and salads expertly prepared using the finest ingredients at the obvious it's all about the gas. So according to was an analyst at the Apple iPhone acts. And to kill off later this year it has even been around for years iPhone iPad iPod ten. IPhone acts I I am I'm not I'm not going with this ten garbage that they're trying to push up no I think we should shocked because I don't know what they're gonna do when iPhone actual iPhone ten is due to come out two year note this year it's their turn it you're trying to catch him. You're ya got to figure but I'll crap where use that it's that I've thrown ten point one ya so. Tell this is the this was the new iPhone that was going for a thousand bucks right out of him by a thousand bucks isn't that episode started at a thousand bucks and had. Facial recognition to unlock right yep. Why in itself. Because it cost thousand Bob hey Erica I would imagine that's the number one reason and at night it's plateaued. It's just I think people finally got to the the price point where they said this is too much. You know it's. I still remember when the when the first iPhone came out keep mind this is 2007 them. First of all was subsidized by AT&T you didn't pay full boat for they pretty much said look creative we're gonna only charge and it was 200 and and they ate the rest of death but even then like let's say you got an un subsidized iPhone back then. I believe the cost either 40450. Doll yeah it was in that ballpark. I know there's inflation and everything but it thousand dollars for phone. I think it finally clicked in people's minds that late look I'm buying a computer it's just it's too expensive brain you know and I I don't know exactly how much is the Max I'd spend on a phone but somewhere in that five to 600 dollar range kind of feels right to steal. Yeah exactly for me I've not even whatsoever tractor too. Any new fall that's a thousand dollars let alone the iPhone experts at the differences as a bigger screen. No headphone Jack. And can unlock with your face you can make facial emotions which who cares. So I don't care this may be this makes me think of uninteresting subject we're dealing with all of these issues with FaceBook right now where. They were. The business model was selling consumer data. Which is a very different business model for him Apple's selling a product and they I'm sure they have lots of loads of user information on all their customers. But it appears that it's not a big revenue generator for that they're not selling that third part is not clear that generate much on. To be fair though their technology is used for other companies to pretty much generate that data and then sell so I don't know apple is you know 100% innocent all that. But I guess my point would be look if you're letting other companies take advantage of this anyway and airman not in they are. Executing on it. I hate to bring this up as we are all really pissed off at FaceBook for there issues but wouldn't that be a good way from the bring Apple iPhone though. Price down. In theory yes. But then you also kind of lose that high ground that's a selling point for a lot of people now you know one of the reasons why some people by apple products is because they are secure and they don't sell your date and it's that. And it's up. Very hip right pigs then yeah I mean the whole touted their new iPhone is it to read no my I think it's ridiculous my concern is more so. If you go back to the early 1990s. You had this huge growth in windows compatible computers that's when Dell came out and an HP you know that's when all this company's group. In all those companies were insanely profitable until about 1998. When everyone realized hey these are all the same I'm not really getting anything unique here anymore. I do wonder if we've reached the point where Smartphones. Become a two monetized and the margins that apple has been able to rely on in that business. Are either going to shrink. Or their market share shrinks as they try to maintain march and in I do wonder if they're getting to that point now. Look here's the caveat that I always have to put out there when we talk about apple. This company that this forty billion dollars a quarter for castle yeah. Deep apple is not going out of business anytime soon no way we hear these stories it it seems like every year all analyst says iPhone shipments are going to be down Apple's finally not going to be around. Man they get 260 billion dollars sitting in cash that they couldn't figure out what to do with until they could finally bring back the US now the tax ritual for repatriating them like. They got more money then any other company on the planet they have just about more money than any other government on the plan. I am going back to this business model I think that you can be successful if you were apple and you fully disclosed it's your consumers and duque. Tim you couldn't I you can buy the iPhone for a thousand bucks in coral can't get a cheer for 600 bucks hammering user data Tim Cook can't. Yeah he definitely can't do it Nikkei Lakewood that after what he said about FaceBook he can't. Yeah yes specifically going after Zuckerberg like damn you you can't say we would never do that and then turn around and doing so let's say they greet reach the realization finally got a thousand dollars or plots his way too much for phone what do they do next is gonna make another cheaper phone I mean that's where they you know they can still make a lot of profit on cheaper phone they just can't have this crazy techno all this crazy expensive technologies acquires expenses screens and expense chips that you facial detection. I think the future for them is going to continue to be adding more functionality to the watch in particular. For health care since that's where the CE. The money going forward the the execution has been great to this point. But I think that's where they see the future being that the the two biggest problems that you deal with on that side one is untethered to watch from the phone and you know that's a battery life issue which should be hopefully solved in the next four or five years. And the second is just being able to have the sensors cheap enough that he can actually do with things you want to care for healthcare you know it's it's what can say okay we can measure heart rate. But they wanna be osu OK here's your blood sugar here's your blood pressure you know all those different. Beings. And it here. I get concerned that they've missed the boat on the would be the assistant technology artificially intelligent old. Absolutely yeah Amazon and Google surpassed them so quickly I think there's a backlash coming on those. Yeah on the voices and on the creepy crap oh yeah that's a separate thing but steer itself is pretty stupid. Just Friday here on the financial exchange and has. We have to Ernie sees the whole bunch of big stories to get to obviously GE reporting earlier today they're up about 4% after. A better than expected guidance for their forward earnings. But we just start today. But talking about Home Depot planning their biggest tech hiring push in their history. They're trying to bring on a thousand technology employees by the end of the year not something you'd expect from company called Home Depot. Yeah. Pretty impressive investment they're going to be making commitments eleven point one billion dollar three year strategic investment. Looking in new software and digital solutions. The self checkout line in the supply chains and then obviously. Big improvements needed to that website. Do we talk about Home Depot self check out. It's not good. It's I I have not had good experiences there the problem is not all of the self checkout items have the little portable scanner things ensue if you have something that's bigger than you can on the scanner you scan the bar code NC have to wait for help anyway Michael fence. So if I combine like a big ask piece of wood aren't kid doing it in with assistant. Bundle should rockets and I'm like OK well if your body went like two by fours go through the lumber yard. What if I won it I would if I have other things that I need like when it does self checkout. I enjoy self check up but not home people one at all kinds of problems with so I I don't use the self check out at home people going. Lowe's is the same process that's not just a little bit about it yet not ripping just on Home Depot but. It's I I just have trouble with because it's just it's not good given that some of the stuff you buy there is really big lets it out by like the other week I had a big planter that I had to buy. That the on lake and it's it and move on to the thing inward to scan it's O. I mean there's also has something to do there ray you can have made Home Depot app on your phone light scandalous things and it was all the stuff he can do now yeah and now be pretty easy I think the stuff that I. One love Home Depot really you know obviously they've been doing reasonably well apart. Yeah last few years where I think they can use help you know if you're there at a busy time of day. You cannot find anybody. Those employees are busy as yet anything and you just can't find one now is so. Some way to trees some digital solution there whether it's an app on your phone that guides you through the story. Hey Antony I just need to find wall anchors we care where this giant store are all angry as I can't find anyone. I was walking around like for. Maybe fifteen minutes once I was looking for batteries. Walking around and they were at the cash registers so I mean there's an Anna I think that one's on you miss my depends where they always are I still that nowhere. Now so I mean they're seem like some easy solutions that they could print play this year but. I see this is a high risk high reward investment they have to do it I think you have to via they have to do it but if they screw it up the real issue because if they screw it up it's a huge opportunity for him. Do you do what's interesting here is that they're doing a lot of this build out in house you know this yeah I was probably third party vendors who can. You know help them on the side and they make the argument that hey our business is different from a lot of other retailers. Thank you is it's not that drastic you know you can find workarounds based on Indian delay out of your stores and things like that. But look when you're saying that you're gonna spend eleven billion dollars over three years that's a huge investment app and it's it's. It's one that they have to get right there's not really a whole lot of margin for error when your making an investment that it. Yeah I mean absurd to their defense of hiring. All of this internally rather than outsourcing and I mean. You talk about their delivery process right if that's one of the things they wanna really get better that is delivering and there they're supply chain management. Not a whole lot of companies are delivery you base they have way fair is that one that can compare to that don't really delivering the big items for free depot is. You know Amazon the lard you know largely their process is delivering tiny little items in on. Home deliver or Buddha Home Depot their delivery I don't believe it's free now correct for a lot of bigger items at a I never got around it except I don't think it is and know when I when I was buying a lawnmower last year. I'm pretty sure there's going to be a delivery charge five wanted them to drop off yet on animal or. We have only del ray fair to whatever it weaker like I got you know would of fool me you know TV stand that was you know Jessica meanwhile hung Goler at the you know this is essentially a vehicle. You called a lawnmower via if you're driving gets. It's a bush Murray got to push aka its now that's a B for regardless I think you can high not buy one of Barry's Chevy volts are in on you know like I mean you can buy. Eight persons Sauna on way fair dot com and haven't delivered for free so I've can you thinks in the studio. Sergeant Tucker look into that have kept we got summer coming up we need to we need a place to chill when we're doing the show you cells on his hot race. Ultimatum to model will figure out. We'll figure it out. Wells Fargo supposedly the target actually now confirmed. They are going to be paying a one billion dollar fine. Due to the cross selling scandal from last year. And this is the biggest fine levied thus far. By the trumpet demonstration against a major bank. Yeah and we've known that something big has become infamous for that party paid some other fines. Obviously big shake ups at the top of the chain with with Wells Fargo had this stems from. The cross selling as you tolerate this is including forcing customers to buy auto insurance policies that they didn't need you all this stuff that was just really about. Lack of disclosure to customers and then forcing them to pay a whole lot more than they need it would I got sales and service Rea yeah as bad sales incentives and and in no means for them to check when people were you know basically pushing fraudulent transactions employees. Folks I also wanna direct over to financial exchange showed dot com we've got our poll question of the day up there today. And our poll question today. And let us know what you think about the stories we discuss George due to the financial exchange radio network. Joining us in studio now is rocky Morrissey and he heads up between river project in fact you talk about. Local story in terms of trying to clean up some local rivers and some of the resistance that he's run into. As he's tried to make those efforts rocky thank you for joining us thank you for him rocky can you talk a little bit about out what to clean river project is before we dig into the details in a cleaver project recited fourteen years ago. We mourn the tires the tires in 81 cars over 101000 tires. He neighmond 200 tons of global debris as well as the other ways to comes on the report but what rivers are you removing these that would take it we're talking about the Merrimack River. So the Merrimack OK so you've removed how many cars did you say 808181. Cars. And how many tires over 101000 times. How how all these tires and up in the river to begin with basically back then no wonder recycling resist that dump in forget and even today goes on people wanna pay that recycled that finals recycled tire or TV they destroyed mammoth growth. How do you find them on the flow well. That's ice sickle on the edge of the the banks and now we've pretty much walk along the banks and scanned the banks and LaMont LaMont. But you still get that guy does one pay is recycle bill and what room what about cars Heidi I mean those don't. Float and guess send those those tend to head down towards the bottom so. I mean are you expecting to continue finding more cars as you go here basically we scanned the food we skin of the ball on the liver from Lawrence all of it to lol. And that basically this probably about maybe another twenty to thirty cast album I've been pretty crusty. We pulled all the salt ones open we could. I used in the side scan sonar that ray marine provide us with. Really help so if you think the other was down there were just disintegrate if you tried to bring him up yet when the divers dive on these things I can actually touched offender looks like a whole Fenner and crumbles and hand is that right so they know not to touch not go to the next one so what's the this latest project that you've been trying to work done in the Merrimack River it's neat. Project to try to get rid of hypodermic needles that ended up in the rivers that right that's correct yes and can you talk a little bit about the background and in how this project came about. Basically than that's best the past few years we've been seeing more myopic hypodermic needles and honor we actually of these booms trash. To trample global trash it was seen in more more Nielsen and we just you know. And we just on clocked him because we knew that was a problem and after while we handle fishbowl full home. So. You know the stock going away this state is given away. Paying for all these free meals opened on pain clinics in the way. So basically it's it's a problem. And so. In terms of where it. Clean river project comes in. It looks like you had been a awarded a planner pretty close to being awarded a plan to try to clean up these needles and then something happened is that right. That's correct the cities and towns came up with a contract fifteen cities and towns on the on the banks from the New Hampshire border down to the seacoast Campbell with a plan. To put a contract offer bid for all the contractors like myself becoming a bit on this ticket to walk the banks. Fifty miles each side in hand pick all the meals on abortions. And then so we came in with the op plan to do that but also what 28 containment booms in a hundred feet out so it would in the next rein stalled. It would catch everything so now walk about down leaving it's running off and there will catch and remove it. And so this was how how what you say the plan cost that the plane caught up our estimate was 355000. What does the employees that the trucking and everything else and where these funds already preapproved for this purpose yes they have in their budget was 400000 we do know that until later on after the Kimmel. The F 400000 set aside for this company needles are there. On these banks do you have any idea. There's thousands. The homeless camps and lol Lawrence on the banks are just load it with hypodermic needles. The homeless who go there and they're all hooked on power and so forth he'll make these camps and is leave everything. On the of the needles in him he's washed down towards the banks in the race never via. So that this planet would cost about 350000. Dollars to clean up why did the money not end up being distributed free to do this we don't know they just walked away they said that did that. They had they didn't give us an answer they walked away I know that the Merrimack Valley. Planning commission herald. I asked that they should get state funding for this of one of the mayor says let's not waste our money on this was its a shame it's a sham as a drink the water. Community 600000 people drink this water. It's a sham all these data is gonna end up on Salisbury beach new report. You know the main stood in order to cape gonna go to Maine all the big wash over the ocean he's washed back on the beaches so what's next as far as where you go in terms of trying to move forward with this now. Basically we get a petition right now on IV city and town along the banks that put this RPO. We're actually going to. A sign have a but he sent petition asking the mayor's managers and elect officials to take action on this issue. Working how'd you get involved in this in the first place what was what was the kinda drew you to. This type of work I was born racer on the Merrimack for a my front yeah I was highway in the back it was say. Was the reverend and I grew up watching stuff flow vine and just was in my blood. And as as a young man like I fished and everything on it and I just noticed there's so much pollution and fifteen feet. Tyra TV our kids' toys and it just it was out of control on the it was clean up. Netanyahu is that we you mention again that at the outs that you said 81 cars I believe Andy's pulled out you know thousands of tires at this point who was at that helps you don't just need to pull out 101000 tires on your own. Non on how we putt it looked like accurate copy companies that green mountain 3M they'll bring their employees out. So we we actually putt it with companies that would like to get back green day's. And you know kind of entering payroll they'll bring out their employees so we ponder what. With companies and and they bring their employees it would make a day ever we find the where sites and in clean up these areas. Ned do you have any events planned coming up in the future try to raise awareness about this clinic that you're trying to do we have the a rally in downtown hero Tierra pop GE L product in downtown. Hateful and this is coming. Sundin. Lebanon to. Now you've just been focusing on the Merrimack River for this is the same type of pollution present Ian. Other rivers threaten England as well I would imagine so ornaments or would we like that where we were pondering what the Shaw Sheen river via this this Acura is little river as the common and worse we're partnering with all these small little groups that Iraq. Heroes to all their cleaning so we're gonna make a coalition of all these groups. To bring awareness of what's going on now even if you're unable to get funding for this hypodermic needle project. You're still gonna continue moving forward with the other cleanup efforts that you have is that correct that's correct and so what what's the plan as far as you know where you continue on those this year. Basically. You know we do have is couple cities and towns elected contract with slick warrants contract this. They have a great voting program with a bunch of kids in the water with their boats and and me canoes and act and so forth so they want us protect those kids so will be out there. Patrol those waterways. Child should once a scenario waterways but the other cities and towns. Reluctant to do anything but we do have other. Other streams and so forth we plan on hitting cleanup are on the river banks gonna ask you that would Q will what's kind of your plan for what's next is it just the Merrimack River do you have plans to kind of move into additional waterways we think will pretty much go anywhere were invited were up there and can regulate pocket Salem New Hampshire actually. We actually ski in the key enemy we for C as few cows on their way for permits the dive on that. So we we actually go on a state if we're invited somewhere it's upon us like that will take action. How do you actually get one of those cars out there. Well the diver has been on inspected and enacted they can put if it's too far with the shoreline put in bags. Raise it up a little floater right up all the surfaces against the Florida. And it's and then just kind of pushed off to the stores and get onto a flatbed and taken away you know go onto a boat tour over is that right. An inventory of with a vote rapids and take you know. And so he says there's another twenty to thirty cars that you expect that there's still down in the Merrimack at this point yes. Any idea how many tires are. Mendoza probably a little bit probably a little harder to detect the sonar and their little smaller and I don't know if they reflect quite as well I'll say a funny story in here rule it was a cool location. We can we need to tie a cold there was so many times we've pulled off 4000 tires so anyway from one area one area. One area what was going on there basically there was an old mill live at some always back it up in just dump and ties and it was just all on the bottom. In and and we have to go back every other year now Christmas and shifting and still coming out. Is that right so we are you still find more each year yes we call we named a tackle because we know where to go find more time to what do you do you think is he can network over beaver used for anything can it be re purpose stirs it pretty much. Don't in any can't be used to this now what are we put whatever we can pull out of the waterways reaction recycles its balls whether it's Thai news whether it's TVs we actually have everything recycled. Rocky if someone is interested in learning more about. Going river project and what you do where do today go to find out about. They can find us on FaceBook. And first all I'm gonna tell you that there's many different kinds of irrevocable trust has not just one mine call and so that's what makes it harder let me let me at least try to. Bring it back down to what I think are asking me generally. Irrevocable trust their talking about are these Medicaid income only trusts now the ones are we try to protect assets from the nursing home. So if I was to compare that kind of and your vocal trust with a revoke of trust and the really biggest differences. The irrevocable trusts were protector acids from the national. The Reebok of trust never will so why would somebody use a re vocal bull trots. Over and durable trucks there are times where people have either enough long term care insurance or plot may well or lots of wealth and end their self insured because they can pay their own way through the nursing home so how much money you have to have me you'd like we define rich force I don't. 10000059. Was buying and but still keeps his job even after. The effectively bridge British regulators said that he represented a quote lack of integrity. When he tried to unmasking whistle blower to prevent him from blown the whistle. Starts you're telling me that big banking executive had lack of integrity. Is that much here is that what you're implying here chuck that's what the Wall Street Journal said coroner's report here. Yeah I mean this has been this has been public news for awhile about this investigation going on effectively. Jess Daley the CEO. There's a whistle blowers organization and he attempted on several different occasions to figure out who was a blow was witches. Free he. Susteren icicle that's somewhat unethical and eight on the surface you think okay what it's totally see that happening in Baghdad. But also you know European regulations are a little bit tighter than United States regulations on the sort of thing. Significantly and so Barkley CEO does end up keeping his job the fine is estimated to be. In the seven figure range Suh is a significant fine. But he does end up keeping his job. In today's on news about the coming apocalypse. The headline from the Wall Street Journal is our high school. And my answer is. I hope now. You know that's what I thought too and I feel like people are going to be shocked and disgusted to hear this and call your university if you're one of them but. A university high school well I know but doesn't this according to approximately fifty universities. And colleges. Offer scholarships any sports corinthians it. Fifty. Are offering scholarships. For people to play video games and now CE sports gets a bad rap because it's called. Final it's not sport. But it's the 21 century and it's competitive gaming. And candidates but but Tucker let's let's go back in time forty years Turk should I give someone a scholarship to go play scrabble the and why is called duty and all I'm not justifying the sculpture though I'm not whatsoever I'm just saying it's an at bat rack if you take the financial view of this and then you could say that the scholarships are going to generate more revenue for the most colleges and universities because there going to field the cell. I'd streams to go watch these kids play in the sports turns just like they do with football and baseball and hockey the dissident and money but a life. Look I I don't deny it I just also going to be inches are right I do I just. I do I just don't know. Don't know what I don't know if this is like what I want the world to look like. The doesn't bother me. Hit a government gamer myself you know but I play video games too but I just I don't know if colleges should be giving scholarships. For someone to go play doom. And I won't do. I really I would not be happy where I'd donor to these universities to cede my money going towards. We have all the schools I don't have the list there's fifty of them tonight dental away but I do not most of them. And the other pieces that's going to be inching its your right these kids that play the sports bears make him money on this. And suitably can't do. And a scholarship competed in college sport can't be making money on her. OK so I I I found it here this is the list of in a governing body known as the national association of college. CE. Let's see if we have any up in new wing angle and the good news is it doesn't look like there are any New England after a moment. The closest we have is Sunni Hampton in New York. But it's a whole bunch out in it looks like a lot in the midwest and the south. The biggest names that I recognize on the list Boise State University while. That's a who else that people have heard of in here Miami of Ohio Lanka. So they have one. University of Akron Micah. University California Irvine you you talk. As need all our program and western Kentucky just about seven grade. But you've got all these different schools I mean a lot of these I haven't heard of at all. I don't know if you've ever heard of Lees-McRae college in North Carolina new. Lebanon Valley College in Pennsylvania and a lamp in college and Ontario. Seeks to justify any sort of scholarship even if they are can make money after college. I mean I get why they're doing it but like chuck feels I really don't wanna see my money going towards us they get like. I go back forty years and why didn't colleges have you know. Scholarships for monopoly players governor's making money playing monopoly so let's say that you don't consider outer. Golf to be sport. Is part of my file log debating about this but sport vs game get exactly what if you would if you might consider golf game would have bought you if scholarship money went towards gulf. Just as an example. It's the same thing yeah you know that you're right is the same thing I've even heard of college is giving out scholarships for candle pin bowlers I mean there are a lot of Koreans that silly that day university subdue and Dan it's. I guess it's a changing world and I'm not known just as shocked by this that their fifty universities are offering scholarships but again you know if you follow the money. I kind of get it you know if you if you give a scholarship to one of these kids come play east fourth you're school it turns out to be. Some million or millionaire. It was a right move the university's. I just can't believe we've gone to the point re gets L lake. I could've gotten a free ride when I was kid and I think that's what I'm most upset about here. Is pretty good at some video game Tyson punch out and I was just ten years too early know what I was I was a big battlefield 1942 fan. Cut. You know that those kind of what I what I got really into but. In any case I'd I digress I I just. Scholarship for video games. Folks estate and asset protection planning can be overwhelming. Former Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren comes out and says look retailers need both an online in physical presence to survive but he's right. I think it depends on the retailer but you can clearly see that that's the direction some of these companies are going way fare is looking at opening a giant. I believe a giant retail space everywhere and Amazon has already opened a few. Yeah but then again you know do. I'm trying to think of the retailers that have no need to have me yeah if you're selling video games. Do you need to have a do you need to have a storefront. What do GameStop will know at game stops also out of business now prevalent so. I mean you can do. All of that online yeah. There's a lot of different companies that might not need this but I yeah I see the point why a company like weight fair might need to have a physical presence on. And I think the big things so let's say that your company that is very good on the e-commerce side of things. Having a physical presence can be way to get people and have them experience the products and and say. Oh now I also know that you can sell these to me on line at the best price available right you know eat it. It helps to prevent its kind that the best buy experienced that he had ten years ago where. Only it'll look at this a best buy in the go by and on Amazon right if you have both he can capture both ends of that transaction. And I wonder if we get to the point with store closures and online sales demand that. Yeah can't protest at the products anymore and maybe that's why they need to have both I mean pinched again that's been a huge portion of Amazon's success rate you go to best buy attest that the product decide you like it and bone mortars on names on this ten bucks cheaper. It well I have a look at Bed, Bath & Beyond and on the surface you know it it it doesn't look great but it doesn't look like a company that's going out of business but its have been priced that way what what am I missing on this one. Yeah I think investors are under this week. They are sales growth you're not really eating there about an issue in debt. I think he's being targeted kind of like that next. Is this sort of that you read about it is really just in Amazon choke. That is what investors are worried about it doesn't help that they had the credit downgrades. You know I think that ER that's some of the recent selling you know to earn about whether or not. Companies in the past few laps you'll pay higher interest that debt payment that deftly be it a worry as well. I'm I don't think this is skiers that. I think you're right the need be not. Bankruptcy in the making at that price match. How much debt are they carrying is in it isn't a significant level. It's about one half billion there was not a huge amount but you know Europe brick and mortar retailer right. Now AD increased expenses error you know potentially a bad news and it comes at a time we're Bed, Bath & Beyond is also spending more aggressively to try to build out. It's down digital effort which is good news to get the actual sales but I would spending money which I think maybe some of Austria are worried media not their third. What are they doing from a digital perspective is there anything out there that is interesting and unique on that side. It doesn't appear that way at first wash I think that they are playing catch up to mr. I think back at that people worried me to their credit they are. Building out their digital offerings but I think got a lot of people you don't worry about the act that. To pass. You know the concerns that that the companies that is that you know really just a high and other retailers right. You know not just adamant that we ate there. He Wal-Mart increasing digitally as well. You know one way Europe about beyond trying in nineteen customers is with all those ubiquitous. Promote should all know 40% off that type offerings that we don't get the mail and now we get our email box is as well which. You'll need to get people in the door to the web site but at what cost. Yeah this is my cab do a Bed, Bath & Beyond and think about their other companies right they also own the Christmas tree shop vibe ID in a loser. Relatively small portions of their revenue. In particular look at bad by baby they just lost all the competition from tourism babies. Is there any hope for growth head of these smaller portions of the business. Yeah I think it's possible I mean you know there have been analysts who have waited out the the demise of their it or he would it's about pat the hump without recently. Move that needle and that that issue you know apparently. You know baby products at all though. Don't wanna be the if not but it art. You know physical retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond without looking at what but at the ready is. From but just began and the wave there. Are target all that. Ball is there anyone who may potentially want access to these locations who could view them as an acquisition target or is it not really anything that's attractive than anyone at this. Yeah I'm not really hearing any being just. Yet. Regarding damage possible. Takeover target if need be yet they have the possibility of them getting. Privately other retail I don't TVK. War on other retailer deciding if it would. Be sure about. There was some chatter the earlier this week about possible activist investors. You know what that. Very good wolf Paul thank you for the time today and enjoy the weekend aren't you. Paula Monica from CNN money talking about Bed, Bath & Beyond ticker BB BY. I've been in Bed, Bath & Beyond since. The 2013 made between fourteen yeah I neither I've been in says several Bubba babies. Yeah I was there christmastime which won a bed bath me on our apartment about elevating share. There it's enough that he's texting me most is the equipment. It just a gaffe by a I don't wanna see the death of this retailer. I don't I don't know what Bed, Bath & Beyond compare him advantages but if there's the lead nowhere to go specifically for. Baby stuff import my instrument. Starting to gather isn't babies. Lots it's a dumb question and I should not about that went up. Lot of stuff probably thousands of dollars worth would be my guess election now that the company picnic at the what where's where's the nears by about babies there whimpering tree he. And yeah I just paid you know obviously that's part of their business that I do think has some value there but it's only 10% there last I checked garments XTO. My babies 10% of their partners it's clearly not. A big John owed the core businesses like look of buying need you know a a blender fine need pots and pans by any pillows. I don't know like go to Bed, Bath & Beyond any of those that's the problem especially with kitchen stuff loses like you don't William Sonoma. It's or this problem you have what else a creek I've. What is the crate and barrel yeah look at you just finally they're buying out of the kitchen guys hold yes that's at home goods and ailments that have aka.
