This is the financial exchange with the very Armstrong and chunks of you're exclusive look at business and financial news affecting your day you'll soon be your world stay informed and up today about economic and market trends plus get breaking business news every day. And now the financial exchange with the Barry Armstrong and chuck Exxon. We have three big stories to begin this hour of our program. He's nursing shortage is becoming more acute hospitals that effectively. Gone in the bidding wars in an effort to attract nurses to their facilities. Secondly we're gonna talk about. Taxpayers picking up the tab. Were prisoners to be treated with hepatitis C and then finally with another snowstorm on its way. We need to remind you keep those generators at least 21 when he. Feet away from your house everybody it's Berrian John Moody with you here on a Monday morning. And John this hospital story and the shortage. Registered nurses. Really struck a nerve with me this morning we're hearing about the shortages all over the country. It is acute no question about that and it's particularly. A cute very in areas. Outside of major metropolitan areas we have a lot of these teaching hospitals in great institutions and on in Boston there's a need for nurses but. We have some of the best schools in the country for people studying nursing. And as a place where people learn and wanna stay as it was a result I mean there's definitely a need for nurses and in in place like Boston. But at the same time if there's not that I absolute shortage EC and other parts of the country. We really see this is in more rural areas particularly in the west in the midwest. An example of this Barry's UC health they operate like nine acute care hospitals and more than a hundred clinics. In the west and midwest air is like Colorado Wyoming Nebraska. They have 330. Openings right now for registered nurses what we're seeing being gospel are being offered by some of these hospital groups and individual hospitals. Our five figure signing bonuses. Free housing college tuition for employees. And their children so it's it's that big an issue and than they need going forward. Is even greater. Why is the need giving you more QB. For what I acting gathers. He nursing has a high burnout Russia via the beast the gals in the most nurses are dealt I think the last check we did about 95% in nurses women. The date their retiring in their burning out and yet we don't seem to be graduating from college each year. It's partly that in it's also partly the fact that more people now have access to healthcare. The downside of getting more people into the system is. There's more over need to treat them and so. You know one thing with the Affordable Care Act as we have seen expansion. In the access to health care. Which has created. Of grow large demand for things like emergency room services. A large demand for things like war primary care physicians. Longer alliance for specialist and guess what part of that is the fact that we need more nurses. And end the nation's aging population is another factor bury every year. More of a skip a year older and those of us like you know my agent your rage. We're at the point now where we tend to require. More hospitalizations. More care more treatment in the American Nurses Association is estimating the United States would lead to produce. More than one million new registered nurses in just the next four years just to meet our demands. And we're not we don't have that many graduating from college so we're bringing them in from foreign countries to fill out these gaps and in places were nurses choose to not to wanna relocate. If this is not a new problem in rural areas very this has been a problem now for several years. Well when it's happening a lot of become traveling. It is yeah these gals can make a lot of money as traveling nurse can get reimbursed for your travel meals and free house. At times if you per team for food and it'll work six days a week make big bag of money for three or four months and then move on next game and you know the one thing I'd suggest is if you're gonna footloose and fancy free and and in being in a certain city is not critically important to you. By no means consider moving to a place like the midwest or west. The cost of living is a fraction of what it is here OK you might not make as much as you might at Mass. General. What did you go to make good money in your and that money is gonna go really really far so. You know if you like the open land and you know like skiing and would prefer what would be comfortable in a rural setting. The world is your oyster there were plenty of opportunities. Speaking of money prisoners in Massachusetts who have hepatitis C. Could soon be treated more frequently and with more effective and more expensive drugs as part of what is believed to be. A ground breaking class action settlement agreed. Agreement reached with the Massachusetts department of corrections being reported by the Boston Globe sought over the weekend. And you know at first glance. It when you look at this issue John you say okay well. You've got sparks Italy 2000 prisoners. In Massachusetts who have hepatitis C. And the vast majority of them. Contract that it. Through intravenous drug use self induced. Hepatitis C. And he say to yourself well. Gee do I really is a taxpayer to I wanna spend between thirty and 50000 cassettes cost of the medication her thirty to 50000 dollars. To pay for that medication to good question. It is a good question raises a lot of issues no doubt about the you know we've. In just a short time we've been talking about this very the prices come down you know Gil he had had an 84000 dollars solution that is now thirty to 50000 dollar solution so. The good news here's the price for treatment and bobbled the treatment is a Q war. That's an important part of this it's not just a mile and a matter of arresting something that you can be dealing with the rest your life. 23050000. Dollars you can buy yourself an outright cure so. That's one point another point is that. If you leave this untreated hepatitis C which is a liver infection that spreads through contact with blood. Or bodily fluids if you leave it untreated the infection can lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer and then. Triggered the need for transplants. We don't know that that they cost her a quarter million bucks for tres. And it could be multiple transfers we real wood wood and a number of prisoners so. On a cost benefit analysis bases with we get beyond the ethics in the morals involved here. You know spending thirty to 50000 dollars per prisoner might actually be the smartest thing economically to do. As I mean it is economically well it is and I think. It's it's ironic that took the day the court system. Litigation to figure that out but. This has been going on liquid this medication first came out John closed 9000 dollars for ninety days. It is a thousand bucks a pill and all people were outraged. But you look at the darn economics that you've had a few more companies come out with the pillars something similar. In the ensuing years but when you look at the economics of this thing. To your point you you're also you know up until the point you get to that quarter million dollars liver transplant. You're dealing with a myriad of health issues all in between so. Thirty grant of thirty granted to treat these prisoners but the drop in the bucket belongs in in the long. Into your point economics and actually changed. If favorably in just the last year because that price as you said started 90000 dollars went down to 84000 now between thirty and 50000 and probably still dropping so. And in the course of this debate the cost benefit analysis is movement war in the direction of offering up but it is controversial because you know you're. You're offering prisoners. A cure for something that they probably brought on themselves. Well and you let somebody on the outside. Who has it and can't afford the medication and that's and that's yeah. That yeah that's that's unfair country. But Tucker so what we have a poll question today regarding did regarding this topic that nice and simple yes or no we are looking for here should prisoners. Be given treatment for hepatitis C in that poll question is located at financial change showed a com. You know my initial inclination talker when I saw this exit now absolutely. Especially given that you know. Johnny liked buck who gets Pepsi accidentally. Get the treatment for free but just think about the cost of a treatment I think any who has at C should be given the pill for free because ultimately. We're gonna have to pay for the taxpayers gonna have to pay for an aggregate paid thirty grid today that a quarter million bucks in four years that's just might. Tucker last week we look at. A lot of power outages and weekly poll island on one race in the cost of electricity. And failed to overwhelm it it didn't today yeah that I don't remember I think it was like 6040. Not in favor of opened your electricity bill 10% the lowest I'm percent. The majority were not paper that. Well and maybe they've got generators but you know we are teasing on Thursday. We're teasing new Yorker. Who started his generator. In it started inside. This house of course in the upcoming did need trip to hospital. On Friday and the to a man died. In a Boston hospital where he was taken hours after he was found unresponsive at his home. That was running on two generators after powers lost in recent storm brings the story because we're gonna lose power again. Yeah it needs sometime on Tuesday should anticipate losing power right. Yeah I mean. This thing there's a mixed news on this the good news is that in much the area the snow is going to accumulate in a massive way. But because it's going to be a lighter fluffy you're kind of snow. That tends to accumulate so. For a lot of particularly inland areas there's actually reduced risk of power outages however. On the coast where. They're exposed this time gonna get the largest amount of snowfall is going to be a mixture of both the heavy kind and also alike kind. And winds between 4050 miles per hour so. You know you have at least an average chance of power outages throughout the along the coast both the North Shore in the sensor and especially on the Cape Cod and the islands. Where gusts are expected to reach sixty miles per hour or more. Funeral and snow in if you go to Home Depot and buy yourself a generator. Understand these things need to be set up twenty feet away from house million but the he can't put them in your garage right yeah you certainly can't put them in the basement you have to put them at least twenty feet away from your house. And ideally what you want to do is have you know I'd wanna buy one used in Iraq generators. If you're really worried it did you lose power there during the last storm struck we did yeah I lost power Tucker lust power were out for about 48 hours its toughest and it really is he's you spend your day planning who fortunately without a lot of snow weird to get around you know go to the mall go to restaurants and got a plan to do stuff during the day in just kind of like. You know grind it out during a night to just get by the eight or nine hours of sleep but in this storm you may not be able to now the house because you have foot and a half of snow. So it's going to be a challenge but I get a warning that. You've got to have these generators away from your house it's a carbon monoxide threat it's also a fighter threat if you have a right prior how's your house burned down. You Tucker pulled the story. From which it locals. About the businesses that we're taking a major hit down on the South Shore he would restorers lost. You know 20000 portrait of inventory I just find. Quite remarkable that it you know as as a country were not willing. To invest in our electrical grid and that in the reason you lost power. Was speakers. You only did agree it hasn't been properly maintain now. Part of maintaining your credit is taking down trees and branches that are seniors these are strangers can't afford to put him underground at least pretty expensive to put an underground. But part of the reason you are without power for forty hours is. You were grid has not been properly maintain the US people I want to pay 5% or 10% more capsule which won't pay anything more. But again I think there's some responsibility here on the part of the utility companies Ian that the individual municipalities to keep an eye on the growth of trees right along with power lines you know where they run. I you know it in my whole attitude John that if you re there and not as good as they should that I I've noticed that marsh field I mean they do a pretty good job but. But you know didn't not cost money I know custody you know that's that's where you know when we kept this question last week. Talk Mercury call people were texting and tech's number by the way 63566. Cost money if people yeah. All of these solutions. To the power outages cost a significant amount of money with the one cut down more trees with one that the lines underground with the wanted dude different types of power generation. It's expensive. And the utility companies if you read their annual reports they'll tie. We went to the attorney general they turned us down we want it to do more maintenance on the grid they won't let us at any. House of poll question for a previous day. When we come back to talk about Martin surely how much time did he get for his fraud case that's next on the financial exchange. Chris talk about Martin's early but before we do I think we need to go back to our whole question people might be misunderstand. The question. The reason I say that this summer Tex lines five away rights. Do we have to pay 250 grand for transplants to yours yours the way hepatitis C works. John explained very well. You can't contract hepatitis C usually through most of the instances John. But most prisoners have contracted it through intravenous drug use you either pay. Somewhere between thirty and 50000 dollars to treat it today with a pill. War. The taxpayer is going to be saddled with a 250000. Dollar liver transplant bill. Somewhere between four and ten years out as hepatitis C progresses. And the reason I think it must be some confusion is on our. Poll we asked the notion. Prisoners be given treatment for hepatitis C and only 41% of our audience thinks that they should. That means 658%. John. Would prefer that the don't get treated and then the taxpayer get saddled with a 250000. Dollar liver transplant. Yeah but I infer from what that text or said I think I think that techsters representing the majority of the people who were voting that way. I think they're saying. Why are you making the assumption. That we need to pay the transplants. If light that as a protection saying and I think a lot of people agree that person entity that the price is the dish let me die. Now you know the problem is the they have these things called lawyers and the lawyers and suing. The department of corrections they get those transplants. And it costs a fortune because not only do you have to pay for the transplant about your testimony for our security around that hospital because you're you've got to prisoner who's in an expert. But again it does raise the issue of you know what should be the what should be the role of government YouTube this process and I agree view that ultimately. It's gonna be a much larger cause I think the techsters saying and I think. A lot of people surprisingly agree with that position that we should be paying for Indians stuff. This is one of the arguments made in the the whole. Death penalty argument when you raise the cost of incarceration. It's massive. No matter where you go right what your credit for transplants or 30000 dollar solutions that avoid transplants or just care. It's extraordinarily. Expensive. Maarten Shirley. Was sentenced to seven years in prison on Friday following the former pharmaceutical executives Koontz conviction last summer. But securities fraud charges. Yeah prosecutors were looking for fifteen years they give him seven and he gets credit for the time served piece of blown away for a long time someone so. Easy to dislike he has this real attitude his cocky attitude as arrogant attitude about it. And you know he he bought these drugs for the specific purse or purpose. Of jacking the prices not these are life saving drugs in one case he increased the price by 5000%. In many you know smugly defended it by saying. I could raise the reason the price even more than that but I chose not to like is accused doing us a favor by increasing the price only 5000% ironically. What got him in trouble is not necessarily buying drugs ends you know selling them for ridiculous prices. But charges related to the management of its hedge fund. He got some issues with two counts of securities fraud. And one count of securities fraud conspiracy. So that's what got him in trouble is his day job with as a hedge fund manager. Well and they got Al Capone on tax nation right now exactly whatever it takes heed they're gonna get shift one way or the other but over spending seven years imprisoning innocent prosecution sought to a fifteen years is defense. Was hoping to get like a year or less but the judgment with seven. Now you know and this is not a guy. Who society's going to mr. It's not like he who's making the EEU wasn't saving lives this is the fellow that test. You know it just was abusing yes system in in do you Smart evidently that he was using his intelligence. In which did manners and in his defense if we put everybody in jail who's been gouging the price of drugs. We got a lot more people in jail. He hits we would. And we are now much my health care industry left to right that's right the market is up. And will be joined by Michael Armstrong and a few minutes for MarketWatch segment when we come back or be talked about that jobs report on Friday. Couple stats that we. Time now for Wall Street watch a look at the market's performance so far today and I don't Berrian jug right here on the financial exchange radio network. And this is John Mooney and fort shocked Wall Street watch Mike Armstrong joins us and Mike. Intel Qualcomm Broadcom on trying to find out who's buying who and what's going on here. Yes so we late last year we heard the announcement from Broadcom that they were interested in potentially acquiring Qualcomm which is. The single largest provider of chip maker Smartphones they also RD. Premier company investing in Tai chi instructor in the United States and Broadcom of course say Singapore headquartered company. Recently. They're been national security concerns about the potential acquisition this would be the largest technology acquisition in the history. And but the national security group is taking a look at this and saying you know is this really going to work and Intel just over the weekend. Spoke up for rumored to have been looking at Broadcom as well saying well if Broadcom acquired all content that could be a significant danger to our own business and out Intel throwing themselves and the next thing. You know if this acquisition goes through that we might tried to acquire brought calm after the fact so. All that news today Intel is down about 86 cents one point 65%. Broadcom has nearly seven dollars about two and three quarters percent and Paul has not removed on the news but it is a did they convoluted story at this point that work trying to keep track of that and sees movement. And as far as the stock market goes right now it we know. Premarket we're up like triple digits this seems like it's been a slow fade since then. Yes tempered a little bit at this point the Dow is up very slightly less than twenty points the S and p.'s that's just a few points and the NASDAQ up about half. Percent so not any huge moves today so far. All right Mike Armstrong with Wall Street watch thank you very much. Art. Very Armstrong 313. Thousand jobs added last month we feeling pretty good about the economy now. We are eight I think that's a robust jobs report. Oh in and we were able to glean. With industries were really seen them I mean. 92000. Were in the construction and manufacturing sectors. In another 50000 John or from retailers. Or higher so. You know great they aired just between those two sectors yeah 142313. Thousand jobs were created importantly blue collar sectors are what's driving these gains and that's very very good from middle America is good for American in in in it'll. But you talked about the fact that. On the one hand. But a Wall Street was encouraged that inflation is not out of control mandate they celebrated the fact that we only at a two point 6% increase in average hourly wages bump. The downside of that is people still aren't getting the big bucks for doing their work. And I might theory is that there's likely a lot more slack in the job market the net four point 1% unemployment rate dictates. You've got that but I also wonder talked to an economist over the weekend woody what he. Supposed to use it you know you've got say. A retail worker construction worker middle manager that retires and they're earning. 80000 dollars a year at age 65 when they retire. In their replaced with somebody who's making 45000 dollars a year but has the opportunity to move up to the latter. That's that's part of what he is curious as to why we each growth is so muted. In debt you know it's gonna take another five to ten years piece for you start seeing robust wage practiced. You reality if you're with the company for a long time that promoted on several occasions during your your your salary might be 8092000. Dollars. Chances are when whoever replaces your supervisory capacity you're in your role is going to be replaced the eve be replacing you little early. Well and there's only so much money that can be paid by a lot of these people who were in very very competitive businesses. Who were in a total observation I've not noticed in this is non scientific vary but. It's worked for me like the last 25 years. He is I have noticed that when surface. For everything I won't whether to restaurants. We Wear regular Lowe's Home Depot. Would surface is really good unemployment rate is high and the economy's not doing very well. In I've noticed that when service gets really bad. It's coincident win a stronger economy. In a tighter labor force here and I've noticed I felt like couple years ago service was getting really good. I feel like surface really stinks right now and I I just think we're at a point here we could be looking at some stagflation. Where companies are having to pay. More money. For not necessarily better work. That gets to a productivity problem. Well and I think robotics will solve a lot of an eerie you look at. Let's say you're somebody who's driving the vehicle for. Your days are number very if you talk to any Hooper left driver. The unity unity in their world school they've got the skills that they're doing it as part of retirement game and you know they don't need to do to make money. But he talked invaders were 405060 hours for movers list. They're not planning to do that five year right its attempt religions it's a temporary part time gig and they'll move on into other temporary part time gigs as well. But the U six is something we look at that includes disgruntled workers. In that number. Coincidentally ironically is exactly double the official rate so. We made a lot of progress is Mike and I talked about this on Friday. That number get you back to pre recession levels so that they point 2% bury me be more of a systemic. Problem. Rather than a you know something brought on by the economy you know that has to do some structural issues. That go well beyond just how strong the economy is in that you drug addiction drug itty exactly for its Princeton University study and they theory you know there's a lot of what you're talking about is that prime working. Age 25 to 54. In part of that Princeton it declared. In eight days after studying it. Part of it is due to chemical dependency these guys can't get off the new it's 63000 people died from a drug overdoses mr. In a booming economy is not gonna solve that problem. That as a structural problem has been dealt with. You know one thing today. Black workers. African American workers had. You know very high rates of unemployment relative to white workers. They are labor participation rate now is effectively the same as it is for weight worked their unemployment rate. Is higher. But it. African American workers now are able to gain employment quite rattle the story in every entered the workforce. Yet the improvement here is nothing less than stunning. The participation by race is now absolutely a dead heat the share of African Americans. Actively working or looking for work last month was 62 point 9%. Among whites it's 63 point oh statistically the same the gap has been completely closed. By the end of 2017. The black unemployment rate fell to six point 8%. That's the lowest level on record going all the way back in 1972. So. The progress in this economy for African Americans has been stunning. It has a quick announcement on behalf of the United States Virgin Islands economic development authority. You know if you're doing your corporate taxes now. And you paid 2000003000005. Currently due to the trump immigration policy some people be happy about this others not so much especially university administrators. A byproduct of the crackdown and immigration no question about that but in the last year the State Department issued just under 400000. Student visas which are known as F one's. That was down 17%. From the previous level of the year ago and down nearly 40% from 2015. Most importantly there was a big drop from China down 24%. That's one out of every four students the drop so pretty noticeable drop in the number of visas to foreign student. It's. Andy eat my understanding though it's. China over the last. Fifteen to twenty years has been upgrading their world internal education system. And it's a lot of people are pointing this towards her immigration policy for the east decreasing numbers. You know the the Chinese population wants. Their own education system and they've been building out a part of it might be John these Chinese kids are saying. And stay home in it is when they come to the United States they. Hateful to wish they don't white. Any scholarship money they don't get any financially they pay out of state rates they go to two and a Idaho State after they go to UMass or UConn. At Chinese kid go to UConn probably pain in I don't know 4050 grand a year ago UConn. No doubt about that there's also a technical reason very whether number from China went way down that was because in 2014. There was actually a change in the terms fees and terms for Chinese students it was a very significant thing that probably is affecting this number. The visas that you get are now good for five years. Instead of one so there are fewer these are renewals but not necessarily fewer students so technical reason. On top of that why the China number. Is down even a lot more than the overall number. But the kids it is that schools are getting hurt by this. Young as they can count on certain numbers that count maybe maybe your school had budgeted for 15100 foreign students right hand when you don't get 15100 we annually to 800 that means you've got 700 more students. They are painful which. And yet to you that scholarships it's growing up about. Trip to bad things you know because I think a lot of these schools in my observation. Have become country clubs he walk onto the campus community doesn't resemble anything that you and I went to school back east. You know yeah my son was saying C a lot of foreign students driving like my surroundings and ferraris. Is an interesting collection of of people that we have here who've come to visit a diverse group no question about that it certainly is. You see it Tucker that black panther. A lot of people are afraid that if they transfer money into an irrevocable trust. That they give up control of their assets they have to ask permission to do anything is this a valid concern. You know it's not a valid concern but it's one that I can understand right people in general are gonna say. I heard your local trusts you lose all control and and for a lot of years that's true and for different kinds of trusts that's true. Not for the kinds of trusts if you're concerned about Medicaid protection. This kind of irrevocable trust. You'd do not lose that kind of control at all what kinds of things can you still do in a near Boca bull trust that you don't have to give a controls so let's say you put your house. Can live there you can pay your bills you can rent it. And you can sell. And you can buying a house with the proceeds and it doesn't even restart any waiting periods it's a wonderful flexibility you can also put in your investment portfolio. And and you don't even limit. The types of investments that you could invest in just because it's inside the trust some people get concerned that their trustee may misbehaved you have the ability to change trustees if that's the case you do we have the ability to change trustees and put on anybody else that you would like so. You have that kind of flexibility as well and you can even change beneficiaries. On the trust so. We're talking life strategies target risk have a Larson from morning star joins us Heather thanks for joining us. Yeah. We know that being guard is so a low cost way to execute most strategies to a polite strategy target risk series what it's all about. Sure at the bit in. In part by strategy here is it's said gold rated target rich period that it's looking hurt he ever ranger Rick Cochran is that there's more funds in the period that range from 20% equity and then come on. 80% equity in it in the grass but. Ended Encarta. As he said you know there it was to get low cost exposure at the expense that the bands are low here. They were did they reach eleven big point but income fund to fourteen base went to the grass back. And it aid maintain Chiquita allegations here rather than implement tactical tilt that maybe. And other competitors debate about you know what they would do that it's an app that clapped for cap but these two based static and the perspective says that the vikings managed but they're really run by the debate team that rent ink are Turkic deep strategy that the firm's strategic. Asset outreach to many overseas that he changes you know like purple Leo and that includes the that's been our most senior executives like jedi that being urged chief economist. David anchor goal of the I. So that was pretty active I mean for company that does a lot of passive investing you know I think about this this strategy. Think about it on your twenties you're all stocks in your thirties and forties with a less stocks. Fifties and sixties a lot less stock it's kind of like the the baseline but it's supposed to mean like it's a lot more than just some sort of generic asset allocation this is pretty active. It the day it's a bit static they're not implementing any tactical calculated that a bit and it's aren't the stock conflict and it's not. United spirit strategic and then the underlying its implement it within underlined that a indexed by it's just boring expand that make up the portfolio. I'm adequate bits of stock market index being guards total Internap. National stock index and then coupon and exit makeup that. That probably. Now I know this has been very popular particularly this this concept in retirement plans for a one K plan to Scotty you know. You set the the the judge set the thing right now in India are all set for the next you know thirty years but this is popular retirement plans to fidelity is that how close. In some of their target date funds recently has come under fire. I want to talk about that and just about the popularity in general about this this sort of approach. Sure that as far as outflow of gas at them. In some cases without float with specially if you're speaking about fidelity. Particular estimate. Can be a little bit misleading if you look at it in and did about what numbers because that many plan providers are going to it. Closed that collective investment trap. And it adds up some of that have an investor's point money and you have to be a little bit mindful of the numbers just because on occasion that is just big plant spot there's going to sit that this CIT Gershon at this period. Great point I appreciate your pointed out Heather Larson from Morningstar thank you very much for that report. Oh in very one of the problems here with this type of investment I've seen him use there's like a redundancy. Let's or have a portfolio of you know stocks and bonds. Now all of a sudden might add one of these. You're kind of making a redundant investment because you're already allocated now you're getting something that's kind of allocated as well. Is this that type of strategies generally were. You know the smaller investment Gandhi you know somebody who retires. And you know and has 75000 dollars and therefore right date deep might be well suit suited. To a strategy that people who retire. From IBM have a million dollars in their four point game plan. For the most part I I don't think they're going to use strategies that it's a good strategy for small investors. That that's how. You know I've had been friends and family ask me. You know woody think of this you know went further 60000 bucks you've got. In retirement. Knock yourself out it's a good way to go but if you had 600000 dollars is probably more fish waste investor. Probably not yet you don't put additional money on top of your investments into a plan like that fury over a plan that they'll so. Pay the price of crude oil is currently 61 dollars and 27 cents per barrel. You know the new tax laws have been in effect for less than three months so it only goes to follow that there's some confusion. Related to home equity loans and home equity lines of credit how much mortgage interest can duck. We'll explain that please. The first story today show. We also have an update on Amazon's each Q2. Team make evidently they were seen in Boston last week we'll talk about that a little bit and then. Tucker so Obama will explain to us how a quarterback. Act with a losing record is about to become the highest. Wait paid player in professional football everybody it's Berry and John Moody who sitting in for. Tax audit this week. Johnny in the the home equity lines story. Is one that really confuses a lot of people beat who's. It used to be yeah it was is deductible in the issue exceeded a 1000001 in total loans. If you were able to deduct your home equity line of credit even if he used to buy a boat or go on vacation. Possible change it effective January 1. And we're learning more and more bought this new tax law means and we assumed based on the negotiations that deductibility of home equity loan interest was off the charts but the fact of the matter is it's. Barack kind of but with a big caveat. If you take out a loan to pay for something like a new roof. An addition a kitchen renovation. You can still deduct the interest so that's good news if you are getting you know home equity loan for those purposes however. If you use the money for any other purchase the pale for credit card to pay off student loans to take a vacation you know buy in new car. It's no longer deductible so the question I have your Barry and I I I can't find the answer is. I imagine a lot of people who that's a 50000 dollar home equity loan. Part of that may be for new roof and another part of that may be to pay off some high. Interest credit card debt. Yeah pay off carloads I used to yeah I used to use my home equity line of credit John buy cars and I used it to pay tuition bills when I didn't have the cash. You know only those those were two things that were pretty common I would use in this deductible and the rate was you know it was like 2% percent cutback in the penalties. Now the rates have gone up and you can still deducted but. To your point your total long belt including your home equity line of credit or home equity loan to cannot exceed 750000. Dollars. It'd old must be dedicated to the maintenance of your home if you will as opposed to like Agassi in the good old days we could use it and and deducted it was a great way to get a car tax deductible Carlos because Carlos previous right you were not tax deductible. And Porsche credit card debt we're talk you know 4% or 5% vs 18% to its Ellen O'Brien Lavoy you wanna make sure you don't extend most. The credit cycle out too long to be paying 5% for you know twenty years you wanna put that about a sushi camp before 13 the cost of interest you wanna do that. I guess to the question I have here which could make for an interesting audit is you know I take 50000 dollar home equity loan. Out to you know to pay for the new roof and also pay off some of the credit card. Because I think that's Smart Mugabe and a lot of people doing a combination. Of some of these things happen which are now deductible. Half of which are no longer deductible so like what happens at 52000 dollars in interest on my 50000 dollar home equity loan. And he has 60% of that was for the roof. 40% that's my credit card I just wonder how that's can be calculated. Well house. It be calculated how it's going to be picked up in an auto. You know you write about what the the with the likelihood is of being audited union is the auditors adept enough to say it will proved to me. That you spent 50000 dollars and home improvement I don't know I don't know it's just he's cheating your taxes but my point is. If it's a it's a further complication to the tax code which I don't think the iris ruling need. At any rate we bought our next story which is Amazon HQ. To the year evidently the people in charge of that project we're in. Austin in Boston team visited Suffolk downs which is course one of the rumored sites earlier this week. Mayor Marty Walsh last fall offered up the 161 acre property which. We're straddles the Boston Revere line as his top choice for Amazon's second home course they were in town. But we gotta tell you don't get too excited because. M is on his visiting twenty places that are on the final list so Amazon is milking this for maximum exposure. They got when he cities understandably excited they're walking through the process they get the publicity either. They're getting the equivalent of the coverage we're giving them in twenty different cities across the country all of whom have many prime members. So good news is we're in the top twenty but honestly Barea can't really say we're. Any further ahead because this visit but it's nice that the her check it out to Danica and how better weather for about. Literature the from what I understand and it would be the and I think chuck would confirm this if you were here. It looks like Northern Virginia it has you they've got three different locations in the Northern Virginia Maryland area so it seems like that they've really wannabe. Is that Washington DC area which I can't imagine. A worse place to be just in terms of quality of life late at night there's no place I would. Less like to be in Washington DC. But but that's strategically. And politically a significant place to be there's also a lot of talk about Austin, Texas. Yup and there's a lot of talk about Denver to I won't say this ease in terms of that the possibility that maybe we are in a better situation than either of us think. I've seen some of the betting odds like over in Europe they actually debt pretty heavily on this with I yeah. An ice so I think it was an Ireland they have the vetting process in Boston was tied. For like among the top three. Like the lowest odds though people looking at this objectively are saying yes Boston is right up there in again they're looking for access to brainpower. You can't get better than Boston. You're looking at an MIT Harvard right in the backyard there's a lot of reasons why they wanna be there. The issue just would be the overall cost of living. He's very very high but the again the organ Northern Virginia is expense is very expensive and and also. These positions and Amazon's talking about are higher end positions that would be paying more money to begin with. The average salaries into this well into the six figures. So maybe the cost of living factor isn't as big as were thinking. I think I still in this thing. I I I think we are today and it depends upon. You see a bigger kid graduating from MIT. Is more likely to wanna stay in Boston and to move the Washington. They just days you know if they visited both cities and they said walk GF got an opportunity act go work for start up. In Boston or go to war Washington work for Amazon. He'd be I I think these kids would come and northeastern BU Harvard Yale. Dartmouth the unit new wing and he we talk about Boston being a hub for schools New England in general is a school for the hub for schools. And those kids all looked at Boston has been the big city it's like if you if you're going to school that. Middlebury in from ought to be great when you say wanted to go to the city you're talking about Boston. No question you know it's it's ironic we started the show talking about the donor shortage and talked about the fact that so many are. Are taught in learning get their degrees here at the best schools in Boston in go to work at the best hospitals in Boston. The same is true here with you know MIT the real brains there if they wanna go to work for an Amazon of the Amazon's in Boston that's just the feather and Amazon's cap they're gonna wanna. Stay in the city that they love where they got educated. The next question is which city will Kirk cousins and and for the life of me Tucker I'm trying to figure out why teens are falling all over themselves they're gonna guarantee the I don't know how much money it. You'll you'll tell me Hampshire. In this quarterback he is a losing record. Yeah I mean it's not really to his faults I mean he's got the greatest quarterback in the NFL by far but he's easily the best. Far away freeagent here. It's Maine because of Mittal those around him with the Redskins and their teams always been a joke for the past like five years something like that. So for clock today. Well bull find I would be surprised we know where Kirk cousins ends up at 4:1 PM which is when NFL free agency begins like in no that's okay it's okay. And but the money is Johnny's is astounding. He hit type of my. Money skits and he's not kiddies to remember Jimmy drop below with a grand total of like eight deems experiences like I believe just became the highest paid quarterback in NFL history that's gonna be short lived I think Kirk cousins is gonna be over that. And so against someone else who doesn't really have very much for track record is gonna tell us the record of a guy who has a games' experience but it's a quarterback week. And you know the rules have been set up to protect the quarterback the teams and of the best quarterbacks win super balls so is the cut you it's a 53 man roster. The quarterback council like twelve of those positions. And so you wanna make sure you get the best and right now talker he is probably the best guy available right now voter Brees Drew Brees I would take Drew Brees aged. I don't think yeah he's 38 years old so lie and I don't think he's in it and going anywhere other than New Orleans that don't have it figured out by four collect. He wants us today is a wanna go to war. But it's a good day it's a good time to be quarterback yes this is certainly an air Rogers has been a contract extension he's gonna wait for the Kirk cousins. I think to play out and then he'll probably go past Kirk cousins it hombre he's talking about an extension like unity walk into the room at age 41 it's like. Yeah what do we do like three or four years from now yeah that's that's where the the Little League is just a lot of money on Apple's core goods and those are not guaranteed contracts rate cuts that he might sign 150 million dollar deal. The only thing that matters is how much Tia Tikrit and a team to 65 going guaranteed or something like that anymore map but. Yet exactly the worst contracts and sports National Football League. You get rid of him every year. And he has a seven year contract is worthless him. The Carolina Panthers it is up for sale strict that a football team in Carolina. And it looks like there's number of bids is going to be two billion dollars and pay for the team yet to. Point three billion dollars what 4% as the Carolina Panthers it's worth. I mean it's not even a major market but the fact of the matter is that TV revenue. Is she is so ridiculous these teams could play in front of empty stadiums and their network deals from ESPN and fox and NBC. And everybody else it gives the money would like pay for the teams so yeah I think it's it's a it's a license to print money. And you know everybody who's you know a guy who always dreamed going to sports franchise they're all a bit from each other for the right to buy. But there's on one of only thirty teams rate while Michael Rubin is one yup that's rumored to be sitting and then he's going up against. Potentially. David tepper now. Ruben is worth. Three billion dollars and David tepper is worth eleven billion. Now David tepper all soul its part the Pittsburgh Steelers so he would have to divest that ownership in order be purchased the Carolina Panthers and Rubin owns fanatics which is an online retailer of license sportswear and memorabilia so. In merchandise so. He's of course very close to the sports world and and David tepper right yeah we've talked about him before he he has so much money in what more portly make so much money. That when he threatened to leave New Jersey. They talked about a budget crisis one Mickey did the majors and it created a budget crisis. They keep went to he moved his business to Florida. He says you know do you think Atlanta is a better choice that Austin. And you know John my perspective on Atlanta would be it's on East Coast. Got a big airport. Lower cost of living. Then you're gonna have in Washington. War in the Boston area some excellent schools. Some. Some excellent schools. But if you look in and I don't have those statistics for Atlanta vs Boston or Atlanta vs Washington. But if you look at the the education level on the state level then. Higher highest percentage of educated. Workers is in Boston I think is something like 30%. Of the Boston workforce. And masters to work force has a four year college degree you go to any other state it dwarfs any other region. In the country. And that's. That would be to draw back to Atlanta but I think Atlanta is definitely in the running AI I and I think Austin, Texas is out. I think Denver's out my final 3611. Why is Austin I I would I would thought Austin for sports and education America. He's actually just culturally fantastic thirdly it's tax free. Very biz pro business environment. Good Ottawa East Coast hooker at the the V the you know this is all speculation. And you eat the meat but the speculation is they want something. On the far East Coast and that's I think we take Denver at the equation as well but you put all psyched to be. You know he. Oil when that really knows is Jeff this house yeah I mean ES is all guessing and there's a lot of theories and I I think you may be right but Atlanta is legitimate competition I think Boston is is still in there I think it's. Scalia has the biggest player in the country in manufactured homes they're highly profitable business. Made a lot of money had a difficult time obviously during the the recession in 2009 they were hit real hard but under this. The new rule manufactured home sellers. And now have the ability to steer customers to their own financing arms it's in the banking bill making its way through congress. Which obviously be a big boost to Warren Buffett's son Clayton homes they sell a ton there and I think Berkshire is the largest player in the country. In manufactured homes they own a couple of different companies including Clayton homes in ducked under the state would be able to handle the financing as well and I believe. They used to be able to do that but with the new laws created after the financial crisis. Congress decide to separate the financing arm from the actual business so you know put a big boost for for for Buffett. And what people don't realize I certainly didn't realize this. Is manufactured homes represent. 9%. Of the new homes come on the market pays about 80000. That come on the market it and that's how many team on the market 2060 so it's a big number and they average price is about 70000 dollars. You can't finance these things through Fannie and Freddie are through banking right because there you don't normally it. Typically are presently also to Landon provides you with the infrastructure. So all you old is that home in any case has been in many cases people actually are buying the land and then buying the manufactured home put on top of that I'd actually see that my neighborhood. Yet daddy that's the rarer date that that's an exception is not a majority correct the IP tent 20% aren't buying it on the early. With the ones they are looking for a once were year you know Florida's full trailer parks rate eating about in and manufactured home communities. Well you'd if you move into what those you might pay some amount of rent to the owner of the facility. What you bring year old home in. They're financing easy that the their profit is not in the building homes that profit is finding its near quit finance at about 9% interest this is a fair. Fascinating industry it's growing like crazy and what do you talk about Barry is. Definitely the majority of the units the war we're seeing is real growth. In the nontraditional areas I'm talking about seven figure homes. That are built on properties are talking about the I think the CEO of one of the largest. Real estate companies in the country. Actually has like a 600000 dollar unit built on his property the great thing about these are manufactured homes and call manufactured the number different terms used forward. Is they are built a very specific. Excellent high quality standards specifications. At their precision is clear practice building in the field has a built in a factory absolutely and so it's growing it's more popular it's more efficient. And it's it's a very big business. The if it'll be curious to see the impact on profitability because in up until now the you know for the last eight years anyway. They have been able to finance these things now they're going to be able to say okay. With 7000 dollars to buy your Albert's 200000 dollars to buy your hole and if you're having difficulty finding financing Joseph over here. Can arrange for financing for it 9% the rates are high that that's the one downside if you look at what you're paying for mortgage rate. And one of the manufactured homes boys and in in a real challenge for lenders to use that. In the the mainstream examples you cite. The prices don't go law. And that's a that's a problem for lenders. Hey coming up we're gonna do a story cover story about the FDA opening away for you to test for cancer. By male suspects and it took. From me and hi this is chuck is not in I'm joined today by estate planning attorney Todd lots ski. From the operator of cursing and Dolan with your financial exchanged quick tip of the day and Todd we're talking about how are vulnerable trust's operating. A lot of people are afraid that if they transfer money into an irrevocable trust that they give up control of their assets they have to ask permission to do anything. Is this a valid concern. You know it's not a valid concern but it's one that I can understand right people in general are gonna say. Like her durable Coble trust you lose all control and and for a lot of years that's true and for different kinds of trusts that's true. Not for the kinds of trusts if you're concerned about Medicaid protection. This kind of irrevocable trust. You do not lose that kind of control at all what kinds of things can you still do in a near vote double trust that you don't have to give up control so let's say you put your house. And lived there you can pay your bills you can rent it. And you can sell. And you combine other house with the proceeds and it doesn't even restart and waiting periods it's a wonderful flexibility you can also putting your investment portfolio. And and you don't even limit. The types of investments that you could invest in just because it's inside the trust some people get concerned that their trustee may misbehaved you have the ability to change trustees if that's the case you do have the ability to change trustees and put on anybody else that you would like so. You have that kind of flexibility as well and you can even change beneficiaries. On the trot so. Folks in valid concern you don't lose control when you put assets in these trust and you don't give anything away. Folks there's a brand new guide out from Cushing and dole in the details these very issues it's available by calling 8668. Horry. 5699. Its title and operations guide to the use of irrevocable trusts and again that number is 8668. Foray. 5699. Or get it online at legal exchange show dot com. You skewered Barry and join our exclusive club this is the financial exchange radio network. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that federal. Health officials this week a cloudy genetic testing firm to sell kits to consumers. To test whether they carry gene mutations. That put them at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer. And I applaud us this significant buried because it really is part of a broader regulatory shift involving a lot of cases like this. In this case involves a company called 23 and me incorporated. Two to market this cancer risk test directly to the public now. It basically would allow a genetic testing from to sell kits to consumers. To test whether they carry gene mutations that would put them at higher risk for breast and ovarian cancer the way I think is a good thing is. It's not like the be all end all like absolute openly gay you know you've got to do this because of this it's just the way to inform you that. You know you may have this genetic mutation. And there I mean there may be reason for concern I think it leads to you the next step that you would take with a medical doctor. I'm in in in you know your your concern about these issues. And on many of your saying to yourself with G how much does cost right it's going to be mailer. Costas a 199 dollars pretty reasonable. I mean so it's a 199 bucks in a might raise a red flag that you might wanna refer to pursue with your primary care physician. That's where look at it's not it's not like it's saying okay you've got to here's what you gotta do it's just a way to to test for what he had the genetic mutation. Another story in the Wall Street Journal has to do with drones this and after lagging behind other countries for years. Commercial drones in the United States are expected to be Keyon. Limited package deliveries within months this according to federal regulators and industry officials I'll tell you just a couple places where I see this. Really being via us a service one would be. Transporting a prescription drugs you know from you know. Medical dispensary to hospitals and nursing homes deals he used dramatically there. And then where he could see also John would be. Think about how many ships are sitting off the coast to Boston waiting to come in and blow her off the coast of Washington currently at South Carolina on the West Coast. Transporting goods and services from the mainland to these ships that are sitting at a C getting the uses for drones. Are immeasurable. The uses are immeasurable but the risks in the issues are also immeasurable. I mean how we use that space how we avoid accidents. How we avoid people snooping on others and privacy concerns. Now honestly from a terrorism perspective I can't think of anything that worries me more than drones I mean it. At the risk of being fatalistic we're gonna look back to a time when we worried about people who have to risk their own life to kill a handful of people as being something we worried about. When we talk of what drones could do with no risk what so ever to the people operating those drones. You when to walk into school you're probably gonna commit suicide. You brought gonna get killed with the dirt Droughns there's no risk so at least ten FAA approved pilot programs for various drone initiatives. Are slated to take part in by may but the FDA does have some logistical issues ferry here to make something that has. Wonderful possibilities. Really are reality in day to day life. Well in into it you know the biggest user will probably be Amazon with they're looking at John is. Packages that don't weigh more than five pounds and in staying within a twenty mile radius of the year where else. And that this is obviously huge application for that blood but the other issue is went in in in major metropolitan areas. You know controlling those guys in making sure it's safe and be able to get from point a to point B. I independently it's gonna it's gonna recourse of logistical challenges pitcher is. Member FDIC. You know it was just last week when we announced that Gary Coleman would be stepping down. Is White House economic advisor and economic council. If he stepped down because of the chair he lost the turf war to Peter Navarro. And and he said enough is enough and and he's done bleeding on good terms. But now there's speculation. That's the you have a number of other candidates who might be taking his place. In fact. As we speak we have breaking news to report that you will find fascinating. That is that who. Larry Kudlow. Is the leading contender to replace Gary Cohn according to Jim Cramer this is breaking as we speak. Jim Cramer who's a good friend Larry member of the Kudlow Cramer show says that Kabul is the leading contender in that Larry Kudlow if offered the job. Would accept that is happening as we speak. You know it I talked to. Couple about that you know about his if you think about the Wear and tear that job puts on you John. You'd just the working in the White House. Today it but he said he would serve in he he always said that he says if I'm asked to survey and that's it is just part of he's accomplished many things in his career. Brady does indeed money you'll maybe he's just doing it sees a patriot and so again if I'm asked to serve even though he disagrees with the president on this tariff issue. He would serve in the capacity and I think going to be terrific if he did serve. Because he's got a good relationship with the president and even though the battle is lost the war continues to be fought against terrorists. No question and again CNBC is reporting at this moment that Larry Kudlow is the leading contender and consistent with what you just said. He would accepted a the other person that. Was up until. Two minutes ago it's going to be the leading contender is Chris that Dell who's a former Microsoft and General Motors executive again very well respected known as an articulate an ambitious manager. I would say non political. Very grow respected and I think also would be very good at the job another candidate is Kevin Porsche little more political former fed does. Fed governor and the person that a lot of hawks or a lot of people who are the these the Nationalists would like Peter Navarro. He's one of his top trade advisors. That would not be one of Mary's favorite picks if there were go to Peter Navarro. No it wouldn't 88 guests that Dell is a favorite of Kushner and cull able correct L. But somebody's churn for cut. Well yeah in May be Gilani has actually he was closer to Gilani. Needless to the press on personal. I heard you infect I heard Maloney was very kind and heard Larry as talked about that was you know saying hey I. We should we watch you on television enjoy enjoy your work you see what they're great guys. And I I know that there's a respect there that's between now the president and and Larry Kudlow. And I think the markets would do it quite favorably. You I maybe maybe not as favorably as Gary Cohn. There's that concern the this a little more ideological bent to Larry Kudlow which you when I might agree with but I I think he would certainly be positive the markets. Yes well you'd. Markets. Markets afloat. Defense had told state officials to back off student loan debt collectors. And you know what do we kept him 1000000000003 that's an collected in student loans. And once again they Betsy Devale Ellis can't catch a break. She has a message for Massachusetts attorney general Maurice Healy. The hoping to rein in student loan debt collectors and more he'll he's right back at her saying. You know you're just basically you in bed with the the industry and in the you know trying to make money off people. I just think it's a matter try to get their money. And they aren't they doing it's it's like nobody pays these loans yet Buick I've seen situations where. People just are defiant in his essay while 40000 dollars on not paying public. Why he signed port it's a personal obligation to hit flush and bankruptcy the wire you're not paying it. And you know the states are torturing Nabih enters the company's does a lot of collection. And they're saying well you deal licensed in our state in order to deal logged collect the debt and then then they charge Samoa a ton of money in the innate. The the won't let them get licensed in Massachusetts or Connecticut or any of these other states. That's collective debt I think. I think John the skin and at the court and I think at some point the supreme court's gonna have to. Step in unless congress steps in and says okay we're gonna allow. Debts to be flushed in bankruptcy but I don't see that happening. I don't either I think there's a lot of a strong political bias of both sides here and you know Betsy the vause is in favor of school choice. And she now wants to collect the money that's Odom student loans you get a lot of people who oh student loans you don't wanna pay. And you have a lot of teachers unions that don't like the fact that she wants to bring competition to what essentially is a monopoly. I GE is in need of a lift their chasing Tesla and Siemens. In batters and now. Pretty late to the dance in a way they're trying to compete with two major manufacturers of batteries at GE power is trying a new battery platform in the battery storage market. Huge market as you know it's going to be growing like crazy but can they compete with the Tesla is in the Siemens already have a head start GE aggressive wars what it's called. Is expected to store electricity grid the Bible or started generate about both wind and solar. For later use obviously a great future industry great applications but can GE power compete. The what you want for several players this in the space. Yeah there could be. And then the Internal Revenue Service may want to cut from the 130000. Dollars that stormy Daniels received as part of her hush agreement. So if you get money as a result of an auto mat automobile accident or disability. Emotional distress you have to pay taxes on that however if you get money including punitive damages. EU EU are exposed to attack she never pay taxes. He went when you do when you put down hush money as source of income by you I go to itemized expenses room. Like quality. It's interesting the story Betty you know she may have because after all these years she's gonna have to give back. The 130 plus more to pave makeup or all the penalties should it. I'll but the book may pay for that in wars my guests and your personal experiences that X thousands of dollars each Mac and I wouldn't worry about your finances. Tim what grabbed your attention the most that the of the Geneva motor show this year. I do is always a great showing a lot of looks because on performance cars a lot of exotic cars but the thing that you think it's your word how many electric cars we saw the choke come to me like Porsche and jaguar and even have to Marten. We bring their cards on the table ensuring that all of the EB they've got coming up within the next couple of years when the most important ones indigent or I paced. This is a smaller crossover suvs and it's gonna go toe to toe with as mock election this year but 101000 or cheap argument as Malek starting at about 9000. You expect electric vehicles are really sexy look and wants to go mainstream. Therefore hoping for you right now it hasn't been really the only manufacture playing in that area creating these are not only environmentally conscious but also on the drive a nice looking. But now argument Audi Porsche Jack or a lot of the complete story to bring these girls to market and I hope they or a successful as they look at most. Now the horsepower game I just keeps the I key skate ramp up year after year and still they had several. 1000. Plus horsepower hyper cards right. The other record unit tactics and the place where the electric. Ordered the thing is really coming in a big way to re back I think one you work for the most port power. 1900. Horsepower from their content to electric pepper car on the show floor. Users should not have less than two seconds and it helps speed that they were 258. Miles per hour. I believe. 19100. Horsepower. Not your horsepower 16100 pound beat a torpedo the victim is Jessica for electric motors. One for each we also we can actually distribute all that power across from left to right and from front to back so. We can have the ultimate grip in any situation whether you're on the racetrack or even on a nutritional. Perfect transition to flying car concepts that sounds like a flying car concept without having to fly. We've been hearing about on course for a really long time now and we saw some progress here in in Geneva. Audi and Volkswagen group partnering with Airbus to shore up the concept of a column as Micah. A quad rotary repeat thing that can come down that you pick up a small city car he'd be driving a car in the city. Need to look further this drone you don't pick up your car into a great place. That's a little bit or press the Porsche actually looking at one current tutor he told me. They are making a big investment flying or they wanna have something ready to show off anyway by twelve. Yeah how how soon is is ready to go with the technology sounds like it's there. But again the logistical issue of dealing with a all these flying cars and drones and drones flying cars as a whole other issue right. It definitely is and that's something that we really only begun to think about this point no the FAA is already pretty much at their limit just doing with normal air traffic and you add in this concept of these semi economists were fully economists personal vehicles in the mix. That's where it could get really really can't give you you know the idea wouldn't be an extra book airport air or what from your driveway may be the root your building and it could be that kind of thanks.
