Boston is joining a growing number of cities and towns that are banning single use plastic bags from stores.  Mayor Marty Walsh signed the city's ban on Friday after it was passed unanimously by the City Council. Boston’s ban takes effect next fall, giving stores and shoppers time to prepare for the change.  Shoppers are encouraged to buy reusable bags, or they can pay a five-cent fee for a thicker bag that is compostable. Businesses are opposed to the ban saying it could hurt smaller stores, and benefit the larger chain stores with more money to spend on bags.
